Our Tikanga
Understand the Te Ao Māori principles that underpin our Waka Ama club.

Kotahitanga:
Working together: safety and survival.

Kaitahahitanga:
Caring and supporting of one another and our waterways and environment.

Manaakitanga:
We encourage the practice of reciprocity and inclusivity through sharing of ourselves and of our resources, nurturing all people and accepting our differences.

Whanaungatanga:
Is our sense of belonging, identity and collective strength, not only through kinship / whakapapa but also being related to all within the Waka Ama community.

Hauora:
We support and promote the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all our participants.

Tū Tangata:
We are accountable for our actions. We have respect for each other, for our waka and our environment. We stand proud in our integrity and passion.

Pono, Tika, Aroha:
Safety and survival is primary, being open to all peoples who want to paddle at whatever level, and supporting a culture of kindness and inclusiveness of others.

Ha ora:
Promoting an alcohol and drug free and whánau ora-centred activity.

Māori culture is deeply embedded within our sport.
From the language to the protocols followed, we help our members gain a deeper understanding of Te ao Māori.
- To maintain a constituted Waka Ama club for the enjoyment and pleasure of participants.
- To encourage tamariki and rakatahi and others wishing to participate and be involved to participate and enjoy waka ama.
- To participate in social, regional, national and international competitions, at the discretion of the Club, in a competent and respectful manner.
- To teach marine culture from different cultural perspectives with emphasis on the cultural heritage of the manawhenua.
- To raise funds in a manner which is consistent with our aims, objectives and values for the club’s activities.
- To establish a good relationship with other recreational users of the harbour to assist with our commitment to harbour safety.
- To teach Waka Ama safety together with all the safety requirements of the sport, including wai (water) / awa (river) / moana (sea) survival and safety measures.
- To promote mauri, tikaka and kawa to foster and enhance hauora and relationship with Takaroa.
- To foster relationships with other Waka Ama clubs in the South Island.
